Karl Mordo made Baron Nikolai Mordo. Nikolai was tutored in the mystic arts by his mistress, Miarka, the Witch-Queen of the Gypsies. German mystic, Viscount Krowler, wanted a grandson to further his legacy, he arranged his daughter Sara to marry Nikolai; The two lovers would have Karl Amadeus. When Nikolai’s Viscount Krowler ordered his daughter to kill Nikolai, which she did, catching him off guard and using her father’s powers. Sara took her son and lived at her father’s castle.
At the castle, Karl would be tutored by Viscount Krowler. One day, Karl overheard a conversation about Nikolai’s murder.
Hearing this, Karl swore vengeance, vowing that as the second Baron Mordo, he would achieve his father’s goals.
At the age of eighteen, Karl would be sent to Tibet too be the disciple of the Ancient One. Karl would find out the Stephen Strange was the true disciple to the Ancient One. Out of jealousy, Karl would torment the young Stephen.
Young Karl Mordo, who had proven himself a sorcerous prodigy to the Ancient One, retained his interest in destructive magic and secretly spied on his mother and grandfather. Seeing an opportunity at last to fulfill his promise, he went to Castle Krowler and captured his mother and grandfather. He would sacrificed both of their lives to the Dormammu, sealing his alliance with the Dark Lord.
Stephen Strange, seeking a cure for his injured hands, would come to the at Ancient One’s sanctum. Perturbed at the arrival of his fated rival, Mordo launched a secret mystic attack against the Ancient One, weakening him. However, upon discovery of Mordo’s attack, Strange offered the Ancient One his own services as a disciple, thereby setting into motion the very destiny Mordo had seen. Mordo would return to his home village and sacrifice residents in his quest for more power. When Mordo mastered his new powers, he began his campaign to destroy both the Ancient One and Strange.
This would lead Mordo and Strange become arch enemies. (even though most of their early battles are unrecorded)(Photo credit: www.reviewingcomics.com)
Mordo’s feud with Dr. Strange carried to the modern era, when he subjected both Strange and the Ancient One to many attacks (one being an attempt to poison the Ancient One).
Dormammu sought revenge on Dr. Strange and this resulted him and Mordo too join forces!
Enhanced by Dormammu, Mordo would have killed the Ancient One if Strange had not have saved him. Strange searched the world for the means to stop Mordo, but Mordo recruited other sorcerers to do his bidding, hunted Strange in Hong Kong, England, and elsewhere he went.(Photo credit: Space)
After a long battle, Mordo captured the Ancient One and lured Strange to the Dark Dimension. As Dormammu vented his rage upon Strange, Mordo struck Strange from behind, which results in Dormammu banishing Mordo to another dimension.
Mordo, drained, made his way back to the Earth dimension. He would use two criminals to kidnap sacrificial victims in hope of regaining Dormammu as an ally. However, both Strange and the heroic Spider-Man stopped Mordo and saved the captives. Dormammu returned Mordo to extra-dimensional banishment once again. When Strange rescued more Dormammu’s victims, he unknowingly released Mordo as well. Strange left Mordo in the custody of the Ancient One, but he escaped, only to be flung back into exile.
When Dr. Strange accidentally unleashed a plague of uncontrolled magic upon the world, Strange teamed up with Mordo to stop the plague. Mordo would get banished once again. (this guy and getting banished and I right?)
When Dr. Strange briefly abdicated his protective duties, Mordo returned yet again, only to be defeated again. Realizing his mistake of drawing Strange back to his destiny, Mordo finally deciphered the time-traveling secrets of the Book of Cagliostro, decided to start over (literally) by altering the timeline so that he was the world’s ruling mystic (Hey! it’s Marvel’s equivalent to The Flash!).
Ironically, Strange learned of his plot and followed him to the past. Mordo would be driven mad and Strange returned to the present with Mordo, and cared for him at his sanctum.
However, Mordo’s mind would come into contact with the Aged Genghis, an ancient sorcerer who was also driven mad by immortality. Mordo would gain control of the Genghis but was halted when Eternity (controlled by Nightmare) attempted the destruction of Earth, Strange and the spirit of the Ancient One intervened while Mordo made a hasty retreat.
Mordo launched his most ambitious project yet. Having been brought to his nadir at the dawn of time, he resolved to bring about its end by opening the dreaded Seven Gates of Chaos! Collecting sacrifices, he transformed Strange’s ally Lord (Julian) Phyffe into the deadly Azrael. Nevertheless, Strange tracked Mordo to the Nexus of All Realities, whose guardian, the Man-Thing was being manipulated by Mordo. Mordo would undermined himself when he restored the Man-Thing’s humanity to make him a suitable and ironic sacrifice. Man-Thing would disrupt Mordo’s ceremony, throwing him into inter-dimensional exile…again.
Mordo was among the evildoers manipulated by Beyonder. He then put his susceptibility to more powerful entities to his advantage, selling his soul to Mephisto and Satannish. Dr. Strange would vanquished the demons and down Mordo with one punch!
Strange would imprison Mordo in his sanctum but over the weeks Mordo slowly won the sympathy of Strange’s associate Sara Wolfe. When Dormammu, once more invaded Earth and seemingly had Strange at his mercy, Wolfe released Mordo, hoping he would help Strange. But Mordo would pair up with Dormammu only long enough to win the patronage of Dormammu’s sister Umar.
When Strange and Clea defeated Dormammu, Umar offered a truce which left her as the ruler of the Dark Dimension and Mordo as her consort. This finally gave Mordo the new world he so craved. However this did not last long due to Clea soon leading powerful allies to retake the Dark Dimension. With Umar deposed and Dormammu free, to reclaim his lost throne, Mordo retreated back to Earth.
Mordo would learn that he had developed cancer.
This discover would result in him returning to the Ancient One’s sanctum, hoping to end his days in peace. But Strange, also sought spiritual solace in Tibet. It was Strange who kept their feud going, almost beating Mordo to death.
Astrid Mordo, Mordo’s unrecognized and forgotten daughter, transferred Mordo’s cancer to Strange, hoping it would weaken him. Bringing both men to the castle of Nikolai Mordo, Astrid granted her father the opportunity to kill Strange, but Mordo restored Strange by re-absorbing the cancer. He then rendered Astrid comatose with a mystic dagger then teleported her to another dimension. Mordo died shortly afterward, having sacrificed himself to save Dr. Strange.
When Strange was later forced to interfere with the time stream to save Spider-Man, he would resurrect Mordo!
