So, I saw Logan this weekend and I’m still processing what I’ve seen in this movie. I had to go home and watch X-Men the Animated Series to help me process.
This movie isn’t your normal comic book (or Marvel) movie. If you’re wondering, no, this movie is nothing like Deadpool. This movie is a completely different comic book movie on its own and explored a side that most comic book movies have not yet explored. This is quite possibly the darkest comic book movie ever created.
The gist of the movie is that it’s set in the future of 2024 and mutants are now extinct and they only ones that exist are ones being bred in a lab along with Logan, Professor X, and Caliban.
Logan and Professor X meet an escaped lab patient (X-23) and they help her reach a set of coordinates were other escaped lab patients are hiding.
Now…where do I begin. First off, I really enjoyed the movie. Quite possibly one of my favorite comic book films. As I stated before, this movie broke the comic book movie barrier in terms of darkness and grittiness, and that is what makes this movie very unique from most of the other films out there.
Now for those of you who don’t know, Logan is a loose (I mean loose) adaptation of a comic book series called Old Man Logan that was released back in 2008. Possibly the only things that they took from the comic story are Logan being old and run down. There are barely to non mutants left in the world, and the safe place where some of the remaining mutants (in the comics it’s a safe place for almost every person with power) can live. Almost every character in this movie is amazing! They all had great interactions with each other. Hugh Jackman was amazing as Wolverine (as always) and Patrick Stewart gave us a different Professor X than the one we’ve gotten in his previous X-Men movies. We’re reintroduced to Caliban, who was better than the one we got in Apocalypse. We’re also introduced to The Reavers, Zander Rice, X-23, and (what’s safe to assume) the New Mutants.
Dafne Keen (X-23) was a little tiny bad ass! I mean she was cute and scary at the same time! I just wanted to hug her like a freaking boa constrictor, while wearing protection of course (although it won’t do me any good, HA! (and no, not that kind of protection you freaking perverts). She has fantastic chemistry with Jackman and Stewart; you can feel the bond between them. I really hope we see more of Dafne Keen in future X-Men movies and hopefully she’ll wear the suit.
Originally they we’re going to introduce Mister Sinister as the villain in Logan but sadly he was scrapped in favor of Zander Rice and The Reavers. The reason why this happened was because they wanted Logan to be grounded and not have a flashy villain like Magneto or Apocalypse. Now when I heard The Reavers were going to be in the movie I was like “great…these guys.” (Photo credit: Comic Vine)
I wasn’t really impressed with their announcement because I figured it was just going to be a mess of people with 99.9% of their body CGI’d for robotic body parts, but the Reavers in the movie actually made me happy they were included! They were completely different from their comic book counterparts. (Photo credit: MovieWeb)
Donald Pierce is quite possibly the best X-Men movie villain. If I had to list all of the villains in order, it would go Magneto, Pierce, Stryker, Apocalypse, and Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon’s character in First Class). I know there are more villains that were featured, but they were more side villains. Pierce was just cruel and a very cold person in general.(Photo credit: Omega Underground)
The action in this movie was very intense! This had action that you would have never seen in a X-Men movie. There were some blows in this movie that made my body hurt. I mean body parts were being sliced off, claws were being shoved into people’s faces, people were getting blown up by telekinesis, I mean this movie had some brutal action.
The fight scenes between Logan and X-24 were awesome! It was pretty much Hugh vs Hugh! If you guys were bummed we didn’t get a Wolverine vs Sabertooth fight (Liev was apporached about a return but was sadly written out), X-24 kinda filled that hole. Logan and 24’s fights were pretty much fights we would have gotten if Sabertooth returned.

Now I’m about to talk about two things that made me dread this movie. The death of Professor X and Wolverine. I mean their deaths just pulled on your heartstrings! The movie was spoiled for me so I knew how Professor X was going to die, but I didn’t know when it would happen. It still caught me off guard when he was killed. Logan’s death had me tearing up…I mean it’s Hugh Jackman! We all knew the moment he died, Hugh Jackman was no longer Wolverine (he did say that he would return if X-Men goes back to the Marvel).
Is this movie worth seeing? Hell to the yes! This is a very good movie and it’s possibly one of the best comic book movies ever!
