“Batman The Telltale Series” is the latest game to come out of Telltale and I REALLY liked it!
Also, it was my first Telltale game.
The art style in this game is beautiful! It looked to be a combination of Jim Lee and Greg Capullo! You can really see Jim Lee inspiration in the line work and the Greg Capullo inspiration in the art style itself. (Photo credit: Digital Spy)
The story covers Batman stopping the Children of Arkham and him coping with a secret revealed about the Wayne family. The story overall was pretty well done. When I heard Telltale was going to make a Batman game I knew that the story was gonna be pretty rocking. It was original and it kept me on the edge of my seat, yearning for the the next episode. The series also has a lot of twists that it left me in shock after the episode. I mean the twist that Vicki Vale is Mother Arkham is still shocking to me and something I didn’t really agree with. Vicki isn’t much of a villain kind of person. I mean…it’s Vicki Vale!
The story also used Batman’s detective side very heavily. There were moments of the game were you had to bust out the detective vision and reconstruct what happened at a crime scene. I hate to admit it, being a fan of the Arkham trilogy, but Telltale had better detective moments than ANY of the Arkham games in my opinion. Yeah, the Arkham ones were cool, but Telltale did a better job. In the Arkham games you are limited to a certain area and couldn’t move much. But with the Telltale games, you’re traveling all over the room to scanning bodies, look for patterns, and scanning evidence. Once you have everything mapped out, then you get a little story about what happened.(Photo credit: www.game-refraction.com)
The crime scenes/scenes in this game that were gruesome, but not SUPER gruesome. In the fourth episode, Batman visits Vicki’s adopted home and looks to see that she murdered her adopted mother and father.
She gouged out her adopted mother’s eyes and beat her adopted father with his belt and then hung him with it.
We would also come to find out that when Vicki was little, she was locked in the basement in a little cell and would be hit with belts.
The action moments in the series were awesome! They were fast paced and required you to be on your feet because just one slip up and you either get hit or killed. There were some moments where you planned out your attack and then executed it. Now THOSE moments were awesome!
The characters in the game were amazing! Troy Baker as Batman was amazing! When I heard that Batman was going to have a modulated Christian Bale kind of voice (forgot where I heard this bit of information) I was skeptical. But after hearing the Batman voice I IMMEDIATELY loved it!(Photo credit: adria.ign.com)
The fact that this game explored both Batman and Bruce Wayne was awesome! We spent a equal amount of time as both Batman and Bruce Wayne. To be honest, I really enjoyed the Bruce Wayne moments more than the Batman moments. There were options in the game where you had to choose to take a Bruce Wayne approach or the Batman approach.
When I first saw Harvey I was kind of against him being a big, beefy kind of guy, but I grew to like the look. It was just odd seeing someone bigger and a bit bulkier than Bruce. Usually, Harvey has about as much muscle as Bruce does. (Photo credit: Insider)
His evolving into Two Face was well written. Instead of having Harvey get half his face splashed with acid, they have Penguin beat Harvey with one of those stage light things.(Photo credit: Youtube)
THEN they had Harvey’s mind start deteriorating due to (what I assume) the stress of being Mayor of Gotham. I would have added the fact that he kept thinking (or finding out; depends on what choice you made) that Bruce slept with Selina caused him to finally snap, but I don’t think that had anything to do with it…or did it?
Penguin was amazing! I’m pretty sure he was modeled after Robin Lord Taylor’s Penguin, but with a cooler look to him. I don’t know what it is about this version of Penguin, but I just loved him! I was curious about this version of Oswald and what would give him the Penguin name. Being notorious in Europe and wearing a bird mask was a good change from the traditional Penguin look. Catwoman was…I don’t know. I love her and I REALLY wish Batman never met her in this game. I loved the scenes between her and Batman. I could really feel the chemistry between them. The moments where Batman and Catwoman team up were pretty awesome too! (Photo credit: www.thesixthaxis.com)
I wish Batman did not meet her for two reasons. One, she pretty much stabbed both him and Harvey in the back. She used Harvey to get to Bruce so she could steal a piece of tech from him. Two, if he never had met Selina, then he would have not gotten into deep doo-doo with Harvey. Yeah, Vicki drugging Bruce into attacking Penguin was one of the causes, but I feel like Harvey sent Bruce to Arkham to get even with him. I feel that if Bruce and Selina did not meet, and didn’t spend the night together, Harvey would have gone softer on Bruce.
Funny thing. Every time we had those dialog sections with Selina, I chose the “…” option. I wanted to see where things would go.
On the topic of the choices you had to make in the game, there were some HARD ONES. I mean there were moments where I was like “Ahh what do I choose! What happens if I choose *insert option*? What would it lead too?!” There were also choices that affected the game overall. In the second episode, you have to decide to either save Catwoman or Harvey. If you save Harvey, he doesn’t get his face burnt and Catwoman gets injured. There was another hard choice at the end of the series where you either reveal your face to Vicki and get a chunk of your ear blown off or keep your mask on and Alfred gets a blast to the eye.
